Abstract:

Contains approximately 150 items, including commencement programs, calling cards, newspaper clippings, pictorial clippings, correspondence, ephemera, etc, Some of the material is related to John Force's tour of duty as a medical doctor in the Panama Canal Zone. One of the items is a Panama identity certificate, with mounted photograph, for his wife, Ethel Wickson Force. Also includes several artifacts including 3 swatches of cloth from the wedding day gowns of his sister-in-law, Catherine Colegrove Nivison, two honorary medical society medals, and a medical doctor symbol pin.

Dr. John Nivison Force, Professor of Epidimiology, first became a member of the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley in the summer session of 1910 as Lecturer in Public Health. The following year he was appointed Lecturer in Hygiene and Assistant Medical Examiner. Promotion to Assistant Professor of Epidemiology followed in 1912. Appointment as Associate Professor was made in 1919, and that of Professor in 1925. At the outbreak of the World War I, Dr. Force was appointed Captain in the Medical Corps of the United States Army and detailed to the Panama Canal Zone.
